java.microedition.media.MediaException/Error

New postby nj2dx on Wed Apr 29, 2009 8:25 am

I've gotten the following error twice at different places after hitting the play button to resume listening to CrackBerry.com Podcast episode 035.

Error playing this episode: (0) java.microedition.media.MediaException/Error initializing media.

I was able to clear this error by exiting podtrapper and then start podtrapper and I could resume playing the podcast.

Device = Storm (9530)
BlackBerry OS v4.7.0.75 (Platform 4.0.0.94)
PoTrapper version 2.0.0

This might be a minor glitch but thought it might be worth reporting.

I'm not sure what that would be but I can tell you until you hear from Podtrapper, there is an upgrade version 2.0.2. You might give it a try.

I get the same error whenever I try to play a podcast from the beginning. In other words, I can't get any podcasts to play.

Unfortunately there are only like 3 things the BB media player is capable of expressing when it has trouble dealing with a media file. The error you two are seeing, and two generic 'corrupt' errors.

To be fair, though, PodTrapper should be doing more to help diagnose these, I just haven't had a chance to implement a lot of those checks.

Right now the only way to really see exactly what's going on is to send me a copy of the logs along with a brief message describing the issue (you can send the logs to me via the 'Email Developer' menu item).

The next time you guys see that error can you shoot me a copy of your logs?

I got the same error on some other podcasts. I will upgrade to a new version and will send an email with the log the next time it happens.

I've seen this error as well. It appears to occur when I let the media card go into mass storage mode with Podtrapper still running.

I could be wrong, but the steps appear to be:
  1. Play some portion of a file in Podtrapper.
  2. Pause the playback.
  3. Switch away from (but don't exit) Podtrapper.
  4. Connect the Blackberry to a computer, let it put the card into mass storage mode.
  5. Disconnect the BB from the computer. The card goes back to normal.
  6. Switch back to Podtrapper.
  7. Attempt to resume playback of the paused file.

I haven't tested this thoroughly, so I could be barking up the wrong tree here. It does appear that if I reboot the BB or exit Podtrapper before attempting to resume, the error does not occur.

I'm reluctant to venture a guess, but it seems like PT is storing a file system handle or pointer to the file that becomes invalid when the BB goes to mass storage mode. If PT tries to access that handle and the exception is thrown, perhaps it could fall back to whatever method is used after a restart instead of failing and losing its place in the file.

I'll try to reproduce it again tonight, and send a report as mentioned above if I can.

I'd be interested to see if you can still do this in the latest beta. The new beta will silently try to reinitialize the media on first failure after resuming from pause.

Let me know.

Close, but no cigar. Installed the beta, and tried the same steps four times.

The first time, after hitting play, I got the following error
Error playing media: 6: Corruption was detected in the media file. Redownloading may correct it.

When I hit play again, it started playing from the beginning.

The second time, it just punted - it skipped the file as if it was done playing and moved on to the next one in the playlist. There was no error output this time.

The third time was a repeat of the first.

The fourth time was a repeat of the second.

Odd pattern going on there...

Ok, back to the drawing board with that one I guess...

had same error today on my storm 2--bought v 2.6.7. yesterday. i plugged into my computer and enabled mass storage, while podtrapper was running in the background. unplugged from computer after i finished my routine backup. then i wanted to play the podcasts--podtrapper gave me error at that point. i did a quickpull. the podcasts would play again afterwards.
