Audio book improvement

New postby LarryM04 on Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:48 am

This is similar to ljfong's request to be able to use an m3u file, but goes a step further...

I like the way Podtrapper allows the user to come back to the spot where you left off in playback - that works great for audiobooks. I generally put each audio book in a seperate folder, so moving to the next file isn't *too* hard, but because they are MP3 files, the regular media player finds them, and that's a pain in the butt.

What if Podtrapper allowed the user to select a set of MP3 files, perhaps a folder full, and then brought them in, kinda like they were a set within a podcast - a virtual podcast so to speak? There'd be a single place to go for that book, and podtrapper could mark them as .dat files and thus get them out of media player.

That would be really great.

Thanks for your consideration, and congrats on your new baby!!

So I finally figured out how to hide stuff properly on both platforms. On BB if you mark a folder as 'hidden', the media player won't index it. (PT will still see it fine). On android, if you put a file in the folder named '.nomedia' (doens't have to have anything in it) it will do the same thing.

For adding a lot of files at once, you can highlight a folder and choose 'Add to playlist' (optionally after creating and switching to a new playlist) and PT will set up a proper playlist for you.

Is that what you were looking for?

The player still saw the files.

Maybe I did something wrong, here's what I did:
In the top of the SD card I have a folder "AudioBooks" - first I put an empty file ".nomedia" there. Didn't help.

In "AudioBooks", I have a folder for each book. I went to each of these folders and put an empty file ".nomedia" there, still didn't help - the files for each are mixed into the files presented in the media file screen.

I created the file on my laptop with a text editor, just an empty file. Do need to do anything to this files properties or any such???

thanks, Larry

Ahh-Haa! There's a trick to it. The directory can not already exist. Media player apparently caches the data and does not look each time its started.

I removed the "AudioBook" folder, and media player still showed all the MP3s that had been under there. I power cycled the phone - the files STILL showed there. I finally had to do a battery pull, and restart. Then, finally the names no longer showed in media player.

I added "AudioBooks" back, with a ".nomedia" file in it, put a book title folder in it, with MP3's and a ".nomedia" file in it and voilia! The files did not show up in media player.

So thanks, the suggestion works fine! I just needed to use a bigger hammer.

There's a way to trigger the media scanner from code. There are apps that can do it, I'll add a button in PT that will trigger it as well. That should clean it up.
